|Sewing and re-upholstering! (X-posted)

Since my husband and I moved into what we now refer to as our "Adult Apartment" a few weeks ago, we are trying to make it look less "I'm-really-poor-and-just-got-out-of-college-have-a-seat-on-my-plastic-chair" look, and more "I'm-a-grown-up-and-actually-own-a-couch-now" look.
The catch is, we're on a tight budget. The things I've been working on include:
-4 sets of Place-mats
-2 table runners
-re-upholster the scary kitchen table chairs.
-Coordinating pillows for couch
-Chair covers for cool IKEA chairs
-Matching runner for the dresser in bedroom
Total Budget? $200 Can it be done???? YES IT CAN! So far, between thread, fabric, foam (for chairs), lace, ribbon, etc., I'm still $60 under budget! Thanks to coupons, clearance, and especially having an amazing mom (with 2 sewing machines) to help! It goes a lot faster when one of us can be sewing while the other is pinning/ironing/cutting fabric/etc.
Anyways, here are my two most recent accomplishments:
Originally, we found our kitchen table and 4 chairs next to our garbage dump at our old apartment about a year or so ago. So we snatched them...being that we had a tiny table that barely fit two and we were pretty much poor-just-out-of-college kids. Obviously, the chairs have sketchy stains on them, and smell slightly of college dorm. So after we moved, we decided we needed to go for a more "adult" look.
(Notice the gross stains...eww. But hey, free furniture that almost got thrown out!)
The total cost came to just under $8/chair. I bought everything on clearance, and the hardest part was using the staple gun to secure the new material to the chair. I wanted to go with a dark color, but not black, because I'm a musician, and everything I own is black...lol. So, since we have an olive green wall, and a coffee colored kitchen, I thought a chocolate brown would do nicely Especially since on clearance + coupon the chocolate brown fabric was $3/yard. Amazing. The upholstery for the back cushions was also on sale for $3/yard, and I actually really like the palm trees...very cute!
Eventually, I will probably sew another set or two of the back cushions with other fabric just to have some variety.
Reversible place-mats and runner!
Reversible place-mats and runner reversed!
Other set of reversible place-mats that matched the brown side of the runner:
Up-close...such yummy fabric!
The other side...I FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS FABRIC!! It has Japanese Umbrellas on it, and it doesn't match any of our decor, but it does match the chocolate-brown runner beautifully!
Hopefully we will finish the living room curtains tomorrow!
